The City boasts over 16,000 homes and has a population of over 50,000. Land here was originally part of the Rancho Mission Viejo, a 23,000 acre cattle ranch. The City of Rancho Santa Margarita incorporated on January 1, 2000, and became the 33rd city in the County of Orange.

This 5,000 acre city contains 12 parks, four pools, various recreational fields and a man-made swimming lagoon – all maintained with the dues paid into a local homeowners association.
The city was formed from the Rancho Santa Margarita Planned Community and the neighboring Robinson Ranch, Dove Canyon, Rancho Cielo, Trabuco Highlands and Walden communities.
