Homes in Coto de Caza
One of the oldest and largest private gated communities in the US, Coto de Caza means “Reserve of Hunt” in Portuguese, and was originally planned as a private country gun club. John Wayne kept a horse there, and used the shooting range.
The first developments were started in the 1970's, and the last neighborhoods in the South Bend area were completed around 2000. The Coto de Caza real estate market is divided into about 60 neighborhoods. Each was constructed by various developers, resulting in a mix of custom and semi-custom homes.
Home styles in Coto de Caza include a few condos, townhomes, single family homes, custom luxury homes, and equestrian estates. A very few undeveloped lots remain. This is considered a very upscale area, with a median family income over $140,000, and most Coto de Caza homes are valued from $500,000 to $2,000,000, and as high as $20,000,000 or more.
Coto strives for a quiet “country” feel, with no street lights, speed limits below 35 miles per hour (except for 2 or 3 main arteries), miles of trails and sidewalks, small parks, and lots of big old oak trees. Some of the community features include:
- Four gates guarding entries – North (unmanned, near the Dove Canyon gate), West (Antonio Parkway), South (Oso Parkway), and South Bend (Oso Parkway).
- Numerous small parks near each neighborhood.
- Extensive trails for hikers, bikes, and horses
- Coto Valley Sports Club (the “Old Club”, originally the Vic Braden Tennis Academy).
- Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club, which includes two premier Robert Trent Jones golf courses, full tennis facilities, pool, spa and sports club, and restaurants.
- Coto sports park (baseball, soccer, and other athletic facilities).
- Coto Equestrian Center, home of the 1984 Olympics Modern Equestrian Pentathlon events, with 6 arenas, boarding for over 150 horses, and 47 miles of trails.
- General Store – your quaint and friendly access to a soda or sandwich, near the Equestrian Center.
- Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park is located just outside the gates, 530 acres of local wilderness and trails.
Residents in Coto de Caza have a 5 minute access to the 241 Toll Road or 15 minute access to the I-5 which provides a short 30-40 minute commute to John Wayne airport and central Orange County.
